Early Pregnancy Assessment (EPAC) Research

We are actively involved in research to improve the understanding of miscarriage in the first trimester of pregnancy. Your participation may help others experiencing early pregnancy loss.

We are a teaching and research hospital and are committed to improving the health, care and safety of our patients. An effective way to generate new knowledge is to organize and store information already collected at the time of a hospital visit into an interactive database. This is called a data registry. To improve our knowledge of people's experience and outcomes with complications in the first trimester of pregnancy, all new patients seen through the Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC) are contributing de-identified information to the EPAC Data Registry for research purposes; your participation is truly appreciated. All patients may opt-out of participating if they wish to do so.

What is the EPAC Data Registry?

The EPAC Data Registry contains information from patient charts that does not include identifying information. With the goal of better understanding the experience of first trimester complications, the registry will provide us with a better understanding of:

  • Patient characteristics;
  • Patient complications;
  • Patient outcomes;
  • Linkages between the information collected;
  • Associations between ultrasound findings and patient outcomes.

What is the purpose of the EPAC Data Registry?

The purpose is to capture the patient experience of first trimester complications in British Columbia. This will assist future research opportunities and promote continuous improvement in the care of our patients. Fellow researchers will not approach you for future research based upon your participation in the registry alone.

What does opting-out mean?

If a patient chooses to opt-out of the EPAC data registry, it would mean they have chosen to not share their information. Any data collected would be removed from the Data Registry and no future data would be collected.

We use your data according to ethics policy/guidance and as permitted by law. In BC, your personal information is protected by a privacy law called the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FIPPA").

If you are interested in learning more or would like to opt out of this research, please feel free to contact the research team at (604) 875-2424 ext. 4685 or epacresearch@cw.bc.ca
